Keep It Local Centre Proposed for Mullumbimby

Keep It Local Centre Proposed for Mullumbimby

Byron Shire Mayor Jan Barham

Last week MCAN and Mullum Forum, two of the local groups concerned about Woolworth’s push to enter Mullumbimby met to discuss the next stage of their campaigns.

The groups discussed establishing a Keep it Local Centre in a strategic location in Mullumbimby. A centre built with the anger generated in our community by the faceless businessmen, bureaucrats and lawyers in Sydney who believe they are the ones to decide Mullumbimby’s fate.

A centre that would promote local economic and social initiatives with the support of the growing movement across Australia and internationally in response to the bid by large faceless corporations to dominate local economies.

This week an advertisement will appear in the Australian Financial Review titled “ Is it right that a big corporation can tell a small town what it needs?”  and letters have been sent from Mullum Forum to the offices and homes of the Woolworths directors.

The Keep it Local Centre would draw on the considerable national media coverage Mullumbimby has received and with the support of fellow local communities, international, national, and state organizations present the Woolworths giant with a fight of a magnitude never seen before.

In the meantime look out for our letter writing stall outside Santos and let the Woolworth’s directors know what you think of their plans.
