Mullumbimby, a Small Town takes on a Corporate Giant, Woolworths

On Friday the 27th of June, the ABC TV program "Stateline" showed our locally produced movie "Mullumbimby, a Small Town takes on a Corporate Giant, Woolworths" made by local film maker Sharon Shostak

Mullumbimby means “Foot of the mountain” and it’s near the foot of the nearby iconic Mount Chincogan
that Woolworths plan to build a large "Big Box" supermarket some distance away from the central business district .

Many residents of Mullumbimby, a town of about 3300 people, on the Far North Coast of NSW, are not happy about
Woolworths coming to town. Especially when the proposed store is about 2500 square meters, about twice the size of the nearby Woolworths store in Byron Bay 20Kms away. "Such a large development is completely unnecessary and completely out character for this heritage town."

Byron Shire Council twice rejected this application on sound planning grounds but its decision was subsequently over-ruled and approved by the Minister for Planning, Frank Sartor.

The Minister is currently considering a section 96 variation to the development.
