WOOLWORTHS BID FOR MULLUM

No news yet about the results of Land & Environment court case re: Wws on-site sewage application. In any case, Woolworths DA (Development Application) for the (bigger) Stage 2 of the supermarket was approved by the Minister of Planning in Jan 2009 so when the new STP (sewage treatment plant) is built in Mullum, they can officially, go ahead and build the big box. However, the campaign to stop them continues (see next para).

LETTERWRITING TO WWS DIRECTORS: STREET STALL

Volunteers are wanted to operate street stall in Mullumbimby giving community the opportunity to sign a pro-forma letter to the Directors of Woolworths. This initiative has been proposed by "Mullum Forum" the group responsible for the Magical Mullum ads in the local papers. If you can spare some time please contact Deb through http://www.mullumaction.org or jhdolman(at)gmail.com (replace (at) with @).

MAITLAND: GHOST TOWN AFTER DUOPLY CAME IN

See movie on http://www.loveyourlocals.com.au and fill in the petition to Minister of Planning, KKK, re: Draft Centres Policy which will give the duopoly carte blanche to build anywhere. See also http://www.cirr.com.au/campaign/index.htm for other campaigns in Oz.

WOOLWORTHS & WAL-MART

Apparently Woolworths business plan was modelled on Wal-Mart, the world"s biggest corporation which won"t even provide its workers with a cuppa tea. Employees have to pay for a cuppa in an honesty box. To be able to sell cheapo products, they put downward pressure on suppliers who in turn, put the pressure on to their workers. Read some of the extraordinary details in http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2010/jan/12/walmart-companies-to-shape-the-decade. Our Maleny correspondent wonders what the odds are Wal-Mart will eventually own Woolworths.

BOB BROWN IN TOWN

Bob Brown; an entertaining and captivating speaker (I reckon) will be giving a talk at Byron Bay High School on Sat 23 January, from 6.30 pm,. He will be having a ‘fireside chat" with Jan, talking about his new book, Tassie forests, climate change and free speech. The Hottentots will provide live music, there will be an art auction and great raffle prizes as well as refreshments. This is a fundraiser for Ian Cohen"s defamation costs. If you can supply an artwork, cake or savoury for refreshments, or would like to help out on the night, go to http://www.byronballinagreens.org "contact us", or just come along on the night.

Ian Cohen was elected as the first Green member of the Legislative Council has been in parliament for 15 years; a stalwart environmental and social justice activist since 1980. More info about Ian on http://www.iancohen.org.au where you can download Ian"s free Ebook "Green Fire" about Australia"s environmental protest movement. This is our opportunity to support Ian who has dedicated 30 years to protecting our environment and as Bob Brown is not standing for re-election, we may not have many more opportunities to see this great man in person, in Byron Bay.

If you can"t speak freely you can"t change government, if you can"t speak freely you can"t change government policies, if you can"t speak freely you don"t have a real democracy" Quote taken from 5 min video about Gunns in Tasmania, on http://www.bob-brown.greensmps.org.au
