The film "Gasland" (check out http://www.gasland.com.au/trailer ) outlined the horrors, repeat horrors, of fracking such as being able to ignite the liquid that comes from kitchen taps. It could happen here too – even Byron is earmarked (see http://echo.net.au/node/81470 for map of potential fracks.) Rumour has it that Chinese energy companies are involved.

The gas pipeline is going along a major part of Lyons Road - anywhere there is a gas pipeline they can drill without any further permission. drilling is underway in casino, kyogle, the channon - I saw on the news a few weeks ago that there's already a drill site leaking methane in mullumbimby, there's word that tyalgum property owners are being approached and I think we all know the shocking situation in s.e. qld.
