CSG Free Byron Shire

CSG Free Byron Shire

A new local group“CSG FREE BYRON SHIRE”  is taking root. It is part of the CSG Free Northern Rivers, a non-political-partymovement who have successfully declared 15 communities CSG free and 17 more communities are in process to take this declaration. Byron Shire is now joining the CSG FREE declaration process.

The brilliant ROCK THE GATE movie shown 15 August in Byron Bay Community Centre had a full and appreciative house. It showed the Lismore Rally of May 2012 when 7,000 strong people marched in protest about CSG with various musicians donating their talents and enthusiasm to the event. Inspiring speakers such as Jenny Dowell, Mayor of Lismore City Council, Annie Kia, Strategy Coordinator of CSG Free Northern Rivers and Drew Hutton of Lock the Gate Alliance, Qld rallied onlookers to make this part of the greatest social movement Australia has ever seen. Local poets, Mandy Nolan and other quirky people added humour to the colourful event.
Youtube now features 15 clips from CSGFreenorthernrivers, some of the clips were of the rally.  “Gas Rush” an ABC Four Corners doco about coal seam gas mining and the cost to farmers and the environment is available thru google, and it has many links for further info.

Main Arm will be the first of the Byron Shire communities to Lock the Road and Main Arm residents are invited to a Kohinor Hall meeting on Sunday 9 September, 2 pm.

Meetings for the rest of the Shire will be organised soon. Please sign up for the www.mullumaction.org newsletter at bottom of main menu if you’d like to be notified of upcoming local events. Please go to www.csgfreenorthernrivers.org and Take the Pledge.

Please note that Lock the Gate is an effective alliance of people from diverse backgrounds, whatever their politics. It is not affiliated with any political party; it’s a grass roots democracy movement. The success of Lock the Gate nationally is due to Drew Hutton’s incredible skill in building this unusual alliance with all the people putting aside their differences to work together for a common cause. We are all painfully aware of the high stakes involved ... unless we build relationships across the diverse people of our region, we get to live in gasfields.
