Mullumbimby Telstra depot returned to community!
Congratulations to Byron Shire Council and to community for getting the
Telstra site back into community!!
This is our first win over the Woolworths proposed invasion of our
town..... they were bidding against Council (as confirmed by Brett Swales
of Colliers International Auctioneers). Whether the political heat of the
community pursuaded them to back down, or if they had reached their
financial ceiling .... whatever it was, the outcome is wonderful for us in
that the Woolworth's presence won't be in-yer-face at the
entrance to our town (well, not quite as much anyway) and the land can be
used for one of many options:
- a) community/farmers market
- b) Mullumbimby Gateway and Info Centre
- c) affordable housing
- d) youth sports centre
- e) housing or day care for the elderly
- f) whatever else ...
Have your say and let Byron Shire Council know what you want it for!
Whilst writing, our Mayor Jan Barham has a meeting planned with Woolworths reps soon... no doubt they will try and greenwash her with promises. Lateline exposed Woolworth's shonky claims last night on Lateline ( www.abc.net.au/lateline 26.2.08) regarding labelling on Woolworths Select range of paper propducts stating they are "sourced from a certified environmentally managed company that is socially and economically responsible" together with the "sustainable forest fibre" logo. Tim Woods of the CFMEU (Timber Workers Union) alleged that the paper products came from Asian Pulp and Paper who have possibly the worst environmental record... check out the footage and see for yourself!
Also on that programme is an interview with Woolworths CEO declaring that their half yearly profit after tax is up by 28.1% (which works out to about $5m profit per day) probably thanks to millions of Chinese workers loss of quality of life.
Well I don't want to lose my quality of life because of Woolworth's in Mullumbimby. Garry Scott is also concerned and has written the following letter to Mayor Jan Barham:
Hi Jan
Thanks for all the time you put in with us yesterday, it will be fruitful.
I am concerned that you are talking with Woolworth’s rep’s. My concern is that it reinforces their belief and of others that the building of a Woolworths at Station St is a fait accompli. Until the proposed building is completed and their business is operating, I with many in our community will be working to not let that happen. As one shop owner told me who has lived his whole life in Mullum, ‘I have seen a lot of change in this town, however, this will be the biggest and it is a very sad thing and I feel powerless’.
Working to change the façade, painting it green or whatever is supporting the belief that Woolworths is a fait accompli. They are total pretenders when it comes to fresh, green, enviro or social responsibility. Apparently yesterday there was an exposure of Woolworth’s on ABC Lateline and in national papers with proof of their green labelling deceit.
Cancelling your proposed meeting with Woolworths would certainly be disrespectful however it will also send Woolworths a message that not all is rosy with their plans. Our hope to stop Woolworths is that they and their financiers get cold feet. They need to know they are heading into something bigger than their Maleny experience. I think you cancelling your meeting would be a very strong step towards protecting what we value in Mullumbimby. Your cancellation would be part of an international trend of thinking people turning their backs on mega sized retailers.
We are not powerless to stop Woolworths. Some would say they hold a lot of good cards, still, we only need to play harder and smarter to beat them - we can do it. Harder, smarter and with passion has worked so many times before.
I know you will consider my suggestion of cancelling your meeting very seriously and I appreciate that very much.
Cheers and Thanks
Garry Scott
